Pool Design

A pool is an extension of your home and garden – it is a style statement as such; a backyard pool can be an ode to architecture and the surrounding landscaping can create a green oasis to be enjoyed throughout the year.

At Little Wonder Pools, we are able to assist you in choosing the ideal pool and landscaping solution for your requirements.  Before you make a splash and install or renovate your pool, it is good to be aware of the current top trends in the pool business.

Like everything around us, the concept of swimming pool design has changed and is still changing. While there are an array of factors to consider, the top consideration should always be pool safety.  Get serious about fences and other barriers to prevent injuries and fatalities.

Will you choose an in-ground or above-ground pool?

One of the  main reasons for choosing an above-ground pool is that it is less expensive to install.  On the other hand, it ultimately also adds less value to a property, while still having the same problems as that of an above-ground pool in terms of maintenance.

Salt water vs chlorinated pools

Both salt water and chlorinated pools have good features. If you are on the fence, here is a comparison between the two types to assist you in choosing the correct pool of your dreams:

Salt water pools use fewer chemicals and are therefore gentler on the body and clothing, which means no more red eyes and itchy skin. This is great when children are in the water for long periods of time.  It does come with a caveat though – the initial investment is higher, especially because all elements, such as underwater lighting, needs to be specifically for salt water pools. However, it costs less to maintain in the short terms and you certainly won’t miss the chlorine smell.

A chlorinated pool is cheaper to install and easier to maintain.  It uses less electricity as salt water pools require a special salt chlorine generator. Chlorine pools merely require a pump and cleaning equipment.  Be that as it may, chlorine pools are harsh on skin, eyes, hair and clothing. The management of this type of pool is a do-it-yourself style, but it does need constant vigilance to check on the water’s chemical composition.

What will go inside and around your pool?

A pool can be customised to suit all tastes and lifestyles. Shapes are no longer restricted with a range of shapes to choose from – square, oblong, kidney shaped, round and more. There is as much flexibility in determining the size of the pool; small, medium, large – it is all available to you.

The inside of a pool can be beautified with mosaics, underwater scenery or even breathtaking murals.

Edges are unique too. The most common (and easy to care for) are concrete, paving and decking options.  Other edgings to consider are gravel or rock, plants or trees or even planters. Hedges and green screens can also be used to provide privacy.

Poolside gardening

Greenery can turn the poolside experience into a more soothing and relaxing one. Pools with lush surroundings, water features and waterfalls are a breath of fresh air.

Most recently, the trend is to use indigenous South African plants that require little maintenance.  Ornamental grasses, shrubs, succulents, trees and bug repellent plants are also very popular.  Plants that are not recommended are those that lose a large amount of leaves and flowers.

Inexpensive landscaping options

Landscaping tends to be expensive, but there are a myriad of cheap and simple pool landscaping ideas to use creatively to celebrate a fresh and gorgeous new space.

Around-the-pool string lights look great inside the home, and look even better around the pool. It’s easy to install, energy efficient and adds just the right amount of brightness. Underwater LED pool lighting is another winner that can also be adapted to the occasion some can even change colour. Glowing flower beds of pathways add charming light at night, creating a unique mood. Fire Pits also add a stunning accent piece and can be used during both the winter and summer months.

A beautiful, well-maintained pool and garden can add so much value to your property.
